Virtual landlines in the UK: how they work and what they cost
Guide · SetupBy Jon Billington11 min read
A virtual landline gives your business a landline number, like 0161 or 0117, without a physical phone line. Calls to the number are sent on to your mobile, an app or a desk phone, wherever you are.
This guide explains how virtual landlines work, what they cost from nine UK providers, what to check before you sign up, how to keep a number you already have, and what happens to callers when you can't pick up.
What is a virtual landline?
A virtual landline is a phone number that isn't tied to a phone line in a building. The number lives with a provider online, and the provider sends each call to wherever you've told it to.
To your callers, it's an ordinary landline number. They ring it and pay what they'd pay to ring any other landline. You answer on your mobile, in an app, or on a desk phone.
You'll also see it called a virtual number, a virtual phone number, a VoIP number, a cloud number or a landline number on your mobile. EE calls its version Pocket Landline. They all work in a similar way.
Is a virtual landline the same as a virtual phone number?
Mostly, yes. "Virtual phone number" is the wider term. It covers any number that isn't tied to one phone line or SIM, wherever it sends your calls.
A virtual landline number is a virtual phone number with a landline-style code: an 01 or 02 number for an area, or a national 03 number. Providers also sell freephone 0800 numbers, and some sell mobile-style numbers.
If you want a virtual phone number in the UK for your business, a virtual landline number is usually the right choice. It looks local and costs callers no more than ringing any other landline.
How does a virtual landline work?
- 1You choose a virtual landline number from the provider, usually with the area code you want, or a national 03 number.
- 2You tell the provider where calls should go: your mobile, another landline, an app on your phone or computer, or a desk phone.
- 3When someone rings the number, the provider passes the call on. Your phone rings as normal.
There are three common ways calls reach you:
| How calls reach you | What it means | Needs data or Wi-Fi? |
|---|---|---|
| Divert to your mobile | The call is forwarded to your mobile number like a normal call | No |
| App | You answer in the provider's app on your phone or computer | Yes |
| SIM or eSIM | The landline number sits on a SIM in your phone | No |

Many providers add extras on top: a welcome message, voicemail sent to your email, opening hours, a "press 1 for sales" menu, or a whisper that tells you it's a business call before you answer.
Why businesses use a virtual landline
A local number on your van and your website. You can put an 01 or 02 number for your area on everything, while still answering on your mobile.
Your personal mobile number stays private. Customers ring the business number, not your own.
You can answer anywhere. Calls follow you to a job, a second site or home.
No line rental or hardware. You don't need a phone line installed, and most plans have no long contract.
You can choose an area. Ofcom's rules allow you to have a number for an area you aren't based in, if you ask for it, as long as callers pay normal rates for that area code (National Telephone Numbering Plan, clause B3.1.1).
What do callers pay to ring a virtual landline?
The same as ringing any other landline with that kind of number. Ofcom sets out how each type is charged:
| Number type | Example | What callers pay (Ofcom) |
|---|---|---|
| Geographic (01 or 02) | 0161, 0113, 020 | From mobiles, "typically ... included in free call packages". From landlines, "typically charged up to 16p per minute", and many providers add a call set-up fee |
| National (03) | 0333, 0300 | "No more than a national rate call to an 01 or 02 number", and must count towards inclusive minutes the same way |
| Freephone (0800 or 0808) | 0800 | "Free of charge from all consumer landlines and mobile phones" |

An 01, 02 or 03 number costs your callers no more than a normal landline call. A freephone number is free for them, but you pay more for it: see the prices below.

Things that add to the price:
London numbers. Virtual Landline charges £6 a month extra for 0207 and 0208 numbers.
Freephone numbers. Virtual Landline's 0800 plan is £11.95 a month inc VAT. Voipfone's 0800 and 0808 numbers are £5 a month ex VAT plus 3p a minute for each incoming call.
Minutes. Diverting a call to your mobile usually uses minutes or is charged per minute. Answering in an app is often free. Check what's included.
Ringing out from the landline number. Several providers charge extra for this, or only offer it through their app.
What to check before you choose a provider
- 1How calls reach you. Divert to your mobile works without data. An app needs data or Wi-Fi but often costs less per call.
- 2What's included. Count the minutes, the number of diverts and any fair-use limit. ONSIM, for example, caps its £5 plan at up to 2,500 forwarding minutes, and Virtual Landline treats more than 40 calls a day as outside normal use.
- 3Ringing out. If you want customers to see your landline number when you call them back, check it's included.
- 4Contract. Most single-number plans are monthly. EE Pocket Landline has a 12-month minimum term with early termination charges.
- 5Leaving. Check you can take the number with you, and what it costs. See the next section.
- 6What happens when you can't answer. Most providers send unanswered calls to voicemail. See "Who answers when you can't?" below.
Can I keep my existing landline number?
Usually, yes. Moving your number to a new provider is called porting, and most virtual landline providers will take an existing UK landline number. Some charge for it, so ask before you switch. For what the 2027 switch-off means for your number, and Ofcom's rules on keeping it, see Landline switch-off: will your business number still work?
Voipfone says there's no charge to move your number to it. TTNC charges £25 per porting request. Other providers we checked either charge for it or don't publish a price, so ask before you switch.
Can I take the number with me if I leave?
Check this before you sign up, because it's where costs hide:
| Provider | Taking your number to another provider |
|---|---|
| Virtual Landline | You need to have been with them 6 months first (unless you brought the number with you). Yearly plans: £50 + VAT to leave within the first 6 months |
| ONSIM | £20 + VAT |
| TTNC | £25 per number |
| Air Landline | Allowed. No fee stated |

Virtual landlines and the 2027 landline switch-off
The UK's old copper phone network is going digital, and Openreach gives the date as 31 January 2027. The old lines are being replaced by internet-based calling (VoIP), GOV.UK says. A virtual landline already runs over the internet, so moving your number to one is one way to get ready. Check any alarms or card machines on your old line separately. For dates, what to check and what happens to your equipment, read our guide to the landline switch-off.
Who answers when you can't?
A virtual landline makes sure the call reaches you. It doesn't answer it for you.
If you're up a ladder, under a sink or driving, your mobile rings and nobody picks up. With most virtual landline providers we checked, the caller then hears a voicemail greeting. Some leave a message. Others ring the next business on their list.
Only two of the providers we checked offer to answer calls for you, both with people:
| Service | Price | When it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Voipfone PA | £2.50 a call ex VAT, or packages from £10 a month for 5 calls | 9am to 5:30pm, Monday to Friday, not bank holidays |
| TTNC Telephone Answering Service | £12.66 a month plus £1.20 a minute ex VAT | 24/7 |

Virtual Landline says it doesn't offer a receptionist and points customers to a partner. The others we checked offer voicemail, menus or call whisper, but nobody to answer.
That's the gap an AI receptionist fills. It answers in your business name, takes the caller's details and what they need, and sends them to you, so the job isn't lost while you're working.
Using a virtual landline with Ringzel
Ringzel is an AI receptionist that answers the calls you can't take. It works with the number you already have, including a virtual landline. You don't move your number.
Your virtual landline rings you first, as it does now. When you don't answer, are on another call or are closed, the call goes to Ringzel instead of voicemail. Many virtual landline services let you set more than one divert number. Virtual Landline, for example, rings up to three numbers in sequence, so your mobile can ring first and Ringzel can pick up if you don't.
Ringzel answers in your business name, asks the questions you've set and follows your instructions. After every call you get the recording, the transcript, a summary and a check report.
Plans are £99, £179 or £299 a month, with unlimited calls on every plan. Ringzel does not currently charge VAT.
14-day free trial. No card to start. Keep your number.
Questions about virtual landlines
Is a virtual landline a real landline number?
Yes. It's a normal UK number, such as an 01, 02 or 03 number. Callers ring it and pay the same as for any other number of that type. The difference is that there's no physical phone line behind it.
Do callers know my number is virtual?
The number looks and works like any other landline number. Unless you tell them, callers just see an ordinary number.
How do I get a landline number on my mobile?
Get a virtual landline number and set it to divert calls to your mobile, or answer in the provider's app. Some providers, such as ONSIM and Virtual Landline, can also put a landline number on a SIM or eSIM in your phone. If you already have a landline, you can divert your landline to your mobile instead, using your provider's call diversion codes.
Can I get a local number for a different area?
Yes. Ofcom's numbering rules allow a geographic number for an area you aren't based in, if you ask for that area code and callers pay the normal rate for it.
Do I need the internet to use a virtual landline?
Not if calls are diverted to your mobile. Diverts work like ordinary calls. If you answer in an app, you need data or Wi-Fi.
Can I make calls from a virtual landline number?
Often, yes, but check. Some providers only let callers see your landline number when you ring out through their app, and some charge extra. ONSIM's basic £5 plan doesn't offer it. Air Landline charges £7.99 a month + VAT for its app add-on.
Can I send texts from a virtual landline?
Usually not from the landline number itself. ONSIM, for example, says texts from its Landline SIM go out from the SIM's mobile number, not the landline number.
What's the cheapest virtual landline?
From the providers we checked on 10 October 2026, the cheapest single-number plans start at £4.50 a month. Virtual Landline's Starter plan is £4.50 a month inc VAT for calls to its app. Yay.com's Core plan is £4.50 a month ex VAT, paid yearly. Check what's included, because diverting calls to your mobile can cost extra.
Can I get a virtual landline for free?
Not permanently, from the providers we checked, but you can try one before you pay. My Business Number gives you the first month free with no card, for incoming calls only. Voipfone and sipgate offer 30-day free trials, and Air Landline offers a free trial.
Is a virtual landline the same as VoIP?
Not quite. VoIP means making calls over the internet. A virtual landline is a number that can send calls to your mobile, to a VoIP app or to a desk phone. Many virtual landlines use VoIP behind the scenes, but you don't have to answer over the internet. That's why you'll also see them sold as VoIP numbers.
Can I ring more than one phone?
Usually. Many providers let you divert to more than one number, either all at once or in order. EE Pocket Landline offers options for up to 10 mobiles.
What happens to my number in the 2027 switch-off?
Virtual landlines are digital services. ONSIM, for example, says its service doesn't depend on the old copper lines, but check with your own provider. If you have an old-style landline, you can move the number to a digital service before 31 January 2027 and keep it. See our guide to the landline switch-off.
What happens if I don't answer?
With most providers, the caller goes to voicemail. Two of the providers we checked offer human answering for an extra charge. You can also forward unanswered calls to an AI receptionist such as Ringzel.
